Research focus: Participação dos inflamassomas em patologias inflamatórias e infecciosas.

Karina R. Bortoluci, Ph.D., is a specialist in the field of Innate Immunity and Associate Professor of Immunology at the Department of Pharmacology, Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, where she is the Head of the Molecular Immunology Laboratory since 2008. Her research is focused on the role of inflammasomes during infection and inflammation. Her recent scientific contributions include the demonstration that inflammasomes are essential for the control of protozoan infections by macrophages (doi:10.1371/journal.pntd.0002469) (doi:10.1038/nm.3221) and glial cells (doi: 10.1002/JLB.4AB1118-416RR) and the description of non-conventional effector mechanisms mediated by inflammasomes to control infections such as iNOS activation (doi:10.1074/jbc.M110.124297), epigenetic regulation of inflammatory genes (doi:10.1038/srep41686), a cathepsin-mediated process of cell death (doi:10.1073/pnas.1305316110) and autophagy (doi: 10.1002/JLB.HI1118-461R). Karina isthe current Vice-President of the Brazilian Society for Immunology and the former President of Keystone Symposium on Cell Death held in Brazil in 2019.
